A Place to Call Home – Fundraising Campaign – Workforce Housing
While Vernon has experienced an improvement in its vacancy rate, the reality for many residents has not changed. A significant number of households continue to spend more than 30% of their income on housing, placing them in core housing need and leaving little room for other essentials.
For working families, the rising cost of housing creates ongoing financial pressure and forces difficult decisions about how to provide for their children and maintain stability. For seniors living on fixed federal pensions and individuals with diverse abilities relying on provincial income assistance, the challenge is even greater. Many are faced with impossible choices between paying rent and maintaining their quality of life.
As a result, increasing numbers of residents are turning to community organizations and support programs to help bridge the gap. Food banks, meal programs, low-cost transportation, and other charitable services have become essential lifelines for those struggling to make ends meet. Although vacancy rates may have improved, affordability remains out of reach for many, and the need for safe, stable, and affordable housing continues to be critical in our community.
housing is a challenge for many. It could affect healthcare workers, childcare staff, frontline and personal service personnel, etc.
Our Project
OKVHS has purchased two acres at 6545 Okanagan Landing Road with the help of generous donations which have provided us with clear title to this property. Together with provincial and/or federal government funds, this will eliminate the burden of the land cost and make the rents affordable.
With your help we are actively fundraising for items not covered by provincial and federal government funds.
Thanks to PDF funding received from BC Housing – OKVHS and the development team have received the Development Permit from the City of Vernon to build a multi-family complex of 101 units, consisting of studio, 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom units. With the help of provincial and/or federal funds, earth works is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2026, providing over two hundred residents with A PLACE TO CALL HOME in early 2028.
